Frequently asked questions

If your question isn't here, get in touch — you'll hear back from a person, not a call center.

Is Fast Estimating Quotes really free?
Yes. The app is free to download and free to keep — no time limit, no trial to expire. You get a fully functional construction estimating tool at no cost. The only paid option is an optional $10/month upgrade that removes the watermark from printed and exported reports. If you never need watermark-free reports, you never pay a cent.
Is there a free trial?
There's no trial, because there's nothing to run out of — the full app is free forever. Download it, use it as long as you like, and only consider the $10/month upgrade if you want clean, watermark-free reports to hand to clients.
What does the $10/month subscription do?
It removes the watermark from the reports you print or export — nothing more. All the estimating, the material pricing, and the calculations are included free. The subscription is purely for professionals who want polished, watermark-free documents to share with customers.
Where do I download it?
Right here on our site — visit the Download page and click the button to get the Windows installer. It's an ordinary desktop application: download it, run it, and you're estimating within a couple of minutes.
What are the system requirements?
Fast Estimating Quotes is a lightweight Windows desktop app and doesn't need a powerful machine. There's no cloud account and no server to sign into — it installs and runs directly on your computer.
How current is the material pricing?
It's not a generic national average pulled from a web search — it's real pricing tied to an actual store. Fast Estimating Quotes ships with genuine starter pricing from an actual Home Depot and Lowe's store, so you're working from real numbers from the moment you install it. From there, keeping it current is on you, by design: FEQ includes a built-in update tool so you can refresh your pricing whenever you want, tied to your own ZIP code and the store you actually buy from. Most major retailers don't allow automated price-scraping, so no estimating software — ours included — can hand you a true live feed straight from the register. What you get instead is real, store-specific pricing that you control and keep current on your own schedule, instead of a stale industry average nobody double-checked.
Can I price a job with a different store's numbers?
Yes. Home Depot and Lowe's pricing is already built in as your starting point, and you can set up pricing from any store you choose — a local lumber yard, a regional supplier, whoever you actually buy from — tied to your own ZIP. Pro Desk takes this further: it lets you build a fully custom, branded store profile of your own — your own store name, address, and pricing — starting as a copy of Home Depot's pricing that you then edit, export, and re-import as your numbers change. Whether you're a contractor locking in your regular supplier's numbers or a local yard building your own price book, the estimate always reflects the numbers that matter to you.
Do I need an internet connection?
The app itself lives on your computer, not in the cloud — there's no subscription server to log into just to open it. You'll want to be online to receive the latest material pricing updates, but the program and your saved estimates run locally on your machine.
How accurate are the estimates?
Accurate enough to bid from, and honest about where they aren't. The takeoff is built from the ground up — foundation to finish — not scaled off a cost-per-square-foot rule of thumb, and priced with real material and labor rates for your state. What the program can't see are site conditions, your specific subs, and anything not shown on the plans. That's why every line is visible and editable.
What if I disagree with a price in the estimate?
Then change it — and you should. Every line shows you what it is and where the price came from. If your supplier charges more or less than the program figured, edit it. This isn't a black box that hands you a number and tells you to trust it — it's your estimate, built for your market, and you know your suppliers better than any database does.
How fast is it?
Fast. From your plan measurements, FEQ builds a full estimate in about 20 seconds — the kind of number-crunching that used to eat an afternoon.
Who is it for?
Builders, remodelers, and small contractors who need quick, credible numbers without a monthly software bill — and homeowners who want to understand what a project should really cost, phase by phase, before they start.
How is it different from cloud-based estimating software?
Most estimating tools lock you into a monthly subscription and live entirely in the cloud. FEQ runs on your own computer, costs nothing to use, and only charges if you want watermark-free reports. No lock-in, no per-seat pricing, and you don't lose access the month you stop paying.
Do you work with lumber yards and building supply stores?
Yes, and it's a different setup. A yard loads its own SKUs and its own pricing, then quotes a complete house package the same day instead of days later — priced off your book, with your name on the report. It also shows line-by-line where your package stands against Home Depot and Lowe's for your ZIP. If you run a yard, get in touch and we'll show you on a set of plans you've already quoted.
As a loan officer at a bank, is this useful to me?
Yes — especially for construction and renovation loans on owner-builder or DIY projects. FEQ turns a borrower's plans into a phase-by-phase cost breakdown (foundation, framing, mechanicals, finish, and so on), priced with real, store-specific material numbers and state labor rates — the same kind of structured, line-by-line estimate you'd want in hand before releasing a draw. It gives you a fast way to sanity-check a borrower's numbers against an independent estimate, catch a budget that's already thin before the first draw goes out, and track spending against the original phase budget as the project moves along. It's not a replacement for your own underwriting judgment, but it puts a real, editable estimate in front of you instead of a borrower's back-of-envelope guess.
